Community Prayers – August 6, 2021

06/08/2021 by Darren Wright

Local

We pray for people in our community who are caught up in lockdowns, for family members and our kin across Australia experiencing isolation, lockdown or who are unable to return home.

We continue to pray for those in our community going through treatment for cancer, for those starting chemotherapy this week and those who are experiencing a break from chemotherapy at this time. We pray for their medical teams, specialists and carers. We hold the staff of the Canberra Region Cancer Centre in our prayers in the amazing work they do.

We pray for the executives, teachers and staff of our schools, in particular those in the schools of Gungahlin.

Regional

We pray with the Canberra Region Presbytery as we pray for the Queanbeyan Uniting Church community

  • The Queanbeyan Uniting Church (QUC) has just had a minister in placement, Rev Apelu Tielu, in February this year. Please pray for God’s help and guidance as Apelu and the QUC community work together in developing and working out their mission of being a Good News and Good Neighbour Church.
  • A lot of work was accomplished in the past years and we would be grateful for prayers as we consolidate that work and how it can contribute to spiritual growth.
  • We are also working on meeting the diverse worship needs of our diverse community. We’d be grateful for prayers for guidance in this area, as we also face the challenges that have been brought about by the pandemic.
  • Our old and other vulnerable people have been greatly affected by the pandemic, as many are afraid to venture out and come to church. Please pray for the wellbeing of our aged and vulnerable people.

National

We join with the National Assembly of the UCA as we pray for

  • All communities across Australia supporting our First Nations children to grow strong in spirit and deepen their connections to culture, family and community.
  • Our journey to be an Intergenerational Church, where people of all ages are welcomed, engaged and can fully participate.
  • Aged care workers for their constant dedication and care and all they are doing to protect our loved ones from COVID-19.
  • A world free from nuclear weapons and all those who advocate for a world of peace and justice.

World

This week we join with the National Council of Churches’ Prayer Cycle as we pray for Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea

We are thankful for:

  • the natural resources and diverse gifts that come from these countries, such as the distinctive music and dance of Cameroon
  • those who minister to victims of sexual violence, trafficking and other human rights abuses
  • Christians and people of other faiths who courageously have pursued reconciliation and peace among those in conflict
  • individuals and organizations who have provided for health clinics and schools in Cameroon and the Central African Republic.

We pray for:

  • just resolutions to the conflicts and violence among diverse groups and their leaders
  • refugees who flee to other countries, and for those who host them
  • economic developments that make it possible for all to rise out of poverty
  • stable democratic governments that effectively serve the common good.

About GUC

We are a community on a journey. We’ve grown from a small faith community planted in Ngunnawal in the early years of Gungahlin’s development to a thriving intergenerational and multicultural community located near the Gungahlin town centre.

Gungahlin Uniting Church is an open and inclusive community.  You are welcome to join us and participate in the life of our community as we experience life, God and seek to follow the way of Christ.
