On Prayer…

25/09/2021 by Darren Wright

This week James invites us to pray. I don’t know if you remember ever being taught to pray, if you learned to pray when you were young, or when you were old, if a parent or elder taught you to pray, or if one day you found yourself looking to the sky crying out to God for something, anything, or maybe you found yourself walking along a path admiring the world and just thought “Wow.”

I was taught to pray by my parents, and my church, but over time I found that my understanding of prayer, and how I’d pray would change.

Today I find myself praying, as if it were a conversation wth God as I drive, walk, shower, or even now as I type this reflection now.

Author Anne Lamott suggests there are three types of prayer;

Help. Prayers that ask for help from a higher power.

Thanks. Prayer offering gratitude for what we have.

Wow! Prayers that acknowledge the amazing world around us.

What Is The Good News?

03/09/2021 by Darren Wright

What would you say is the Gospel of Christ? The good news of Jesus?

Personally, I find it quite easy to name what it isn’t…

It’s not about being saved
It’s not about the pits of hell and the gates of heaven
It’s not about a cosmic ransom paid
And it’s definitely not about abandoning the stories of the Hebrew Scriptures…

In fact, the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) lean heavily into the stories of the Hebrew Scriptures, all the way to the very beginning…

It is Jesus who takes us back to the beginning,
And reminds us of the God who created us…

What Can We Offer God?

18/07/2021 by Liz Morris

Liz Morris – July 18, 2021

Good morning. My name is Liz and I am delighted to be speaking this morning and grappling with the lessons of God’s word with you. Before we begin, let us pray. Almighty God, we come before you to ask that your presence fall on us, heal us and grow our knowledge of You. I ask that my words be from your mouth and be planted in the hearts of your people as we walk into a new week by your side. Amen.

As I stand here this morning, I am faced with the beginning of a new term. I am high school English teacher and have the pleasure of working alongside teenagers every day. I often have conversations with students that are more about their pastoral needs than their academic needs and a common phrase I say is “high school is hard”. There will be a number of you who are current teachers, retired teachers or the loved ones of teachers, and you know the realities of what the profession entails. Those feelings of apprehension and the knowledge that with the beginning of the term comes bone-aching tiredness and that sustained adrenaline rushing through me to get me through another ten weeks are all too prominent. How do I give more than the minimum to God?

This morning, I see people walking different seasons of life. For some of you, the exhaustion of parenthood is overwhelming the joy of it. Some of you are finding your hands are not as swift as they once were. There are children who have returned to school or are about to start again this week; and with that come mixed emotions and reactions. There are those of you who are in a position you did not think they would find yourself and it’s hurting. In all of this, where is God and how do we give more than a little?

About GUC

We are a community on a journey. We’ve grown from a small faith community planted in Ngunnawal in the early years of Gungahlin’s development to a thriving intergenerational and multicultural community located near the Gungahlin town centre.

Gungahlin Uniting Church is an open and inclusive community.  You are welcome to join us and participate in the life of our community as we experience life, God and seek to follow the way of Christ.
