Home Brewed Pentecost 2020

May 30, 2020 by Darren Wright

https://youtu.be/CwhS3u8sANs
Glory Of The Lord by Common Hymnal (Feat. Jesse Taitt, Cutter Gage & Isaac Gill)
This is one of the songs we’ve been playing a lot at home this month.

This week’s Home Brewed Worship provides you all a number of ways to enter into prayer and to explore the story from Acts. If you’re at home with family, a partner, a friend or a spouse please consider working through some of this with them. If you’re alone, consider phoning someone else and inviting them to join you in worship.

A special thanks to Margaret and Pauline for the liturgy and prayers throughout the material in the order of service for people at home.

Carve out some space sacred space in your home, perhaps you have candle, some colourful material, a cross, a bible, some pictures of the world, artwork or images of Jesus…

You don’t need to use all of this material, nor do you need to do it all in one sitting, perhaps some of these prayers and music can travel with you throughout the week. Use the material as part of daily exercises, music to carry you through the week, reflections to ponder as you walk or stay at home.

For some your focus may be to hear the gospel preached, others the gospel sung, while others may want to find a practice that they can enter into over the course of the week to make space for the Holy Spirit to work on us.

Order of Service

Here’s an order of service curated by Margaret Reeson for people worshipping at home

Singing The Scripture

Here is a playlist of music that explores the scripture from this week, there are a lot of Holy Spirit songs.

What are your favourite Spirit songs? Can you send them in and we’ll add them to our playlist.

Visual Reflections on Pentecost

This week there are two reflections, one on the birth of the church and our annual prayer for renewal and revival, the other invites you to imagine God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit artistically.

If you go the artistic route I invite you to consider sending in your creations, if you sculpt, collage, paint, sketch, etch, mould, write poetry or build please show us your creations.

If you go the route of reflecting on renewal and revival then perhaps you may like to email in your own prayer for revival, let us know what you’re praying for this week.

I’m 44 years old, that means I’ve participated in about 44 Pentecost services, that’s 44 times we’ve gathered praying for revival, renewal and change. But what are we praying for when we pray for revival, and what kind of church are we being called to be?

Statins Of The Spirit

I’ve admired the work of Sue Wallace for a long time now, she has been a creative community leader in the church in the UK working on multimedia and multi sensory worship.

This week Sue has curated a series of stations reflecting on the Holy Spirit. You can access each of the stations this week on youtube on the Stations Of The Spirit channel. Perhaps you might find the time to interact with each station every day of the week.

Bar Theology:

The Bar Theology series is a great way to dip your toes into some deep theological conversations. Over a couple of drinks Dr. Walter Brueggemann, Bishop Thomas Breidenthal & the Reverend Jane Gerdsen engage in a Q&A theological conversation. This short piece includes a conversation on the Holy Spirit.

Home Brewed Family – Pentecost 2020

May 30, 2020 by Darren Wright

Here are a few resources designed to help you reflect on the theme of the Holy Spirit with your family this week. If there are any other ways in which we might help you in your homes this week please make contact and ask.

An All-Age Prayer for your family

Source: Spill The Beans Issue 34

Perhaps this week you can light a candle when you gather for a meal as a family, every time giving thanks to God for the gift of the day and sharing with each other how you have experienced love today.

On the birthday of the Church,
we celebrate the sending of your Spirit.
We tell strange stories
about tongues of fire
and wonky disciples.

These are more than odd stories about
odd people and odd events.
These are stories of your grace and your people.
We are also your people,
and these are also our stories.

Like them,
we get confused.
Like them,
we wonder
how such Spirit-fueled love is possible.
And like them,
we can be afraid.

Send your spirit among us,
and breath your peace upon us.
Help us to discover your love for us.
Help us to discover our love for each other.
Help us to remember our love for ourselves.

Amen.

Questions For Converstion

  • What language do you speak? Many people speak more than one language, ask someone you know to teach you some words in another language.
  • Find a map of the world. Christians live all over the world, pick a country in the world, what can you find out about the way that christians live and worship in that country? What looks familiar? What is different?

Reform – Holy Spirit

This is a great conversation starter, perfect for a household to sit around and engage with. How much do you talk about the Holy Spirit?

Is The Holy Spirit A Person Or Wind, Or Fire or What? – Password is GUNGUCFF2020

The Holy Spirit – A Godly Play Story

Godly Play is a multi sensory storytelling practice inviting the hearer to enter into the story and wonder. This story invites us to reflect on the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps, after watching the story you might learn to retell it with each other this week.

Family Activity / Discussion

Source: Spill The Beans Issue 34

This is another bible passage that can be a challenging read because it is so wonderfully graphic (and sonic) on the one hand and yet, for many it seems such an unimaginable kind of thing to happen. So how might we understand these images in a world that is today far more rational?

Perhaps one way we can engage with it is to understand how the disciples felt. Each day up to now they had found themselves standing on new ground: miracles, healings, facing the religious authorities, crucifixion and now resurrection. Perhaps the vividness of this story suggests the whole movement of faith is to invite us always onto new ground because the kingdom is waiting for us there.

  • Taking that leap of imagination, discuss together a few things you can do as a family to be responsible for in your neighbourhood or school:
  • How might you seek opportunities where you can put yourself in positions where you are open to the Spirit of God’s leading?
  • How might you put yourselves outside your comfort zone as a family?
  • How might you dare invite yourself into places where you feel vulnerable and open towards others and then see what happens?

As a project from now until the end of winter, design a plan so your family can experience something more dramatic in the church than the usual Sunday or weekly happenings.

  • What new place could you go to visit to experience something totally different?
  • It might be something spiritual, such as a cathedral, a different form of worship, a labyrinth. It might be a community project, helping with the homeless, speaking to asylum seekers, engaging with a mental health project.
  • Having experienced this ‘new ground’ how might you then respond?
Ideas might be to promise to support that venture with weekly volunteering, writing letters, leading prayers on the topic in church, speaking to leaders of the congregation to create a bigger project.
  • Once this has been agreed, how might you tell the story of how you got there and then keep people informed?

Breath Lines

In Genesis we read the Spirit of the Lord hovered over the waters…

We also read the Ruah of God, the breath of God, the wind of God was breathed into the creation, it gives us life.

Spend some time this week reflecting on your breath together, this simple practice invites you to draw your breath, perhaps in this act you may be able to experience the presence of God.

https://vimeo.com/408838369
This would be a great breath practice for a family to do together, share your creations with us this week.

Call to Worship

Today is the Day of Pentecost when the Christian Church remembers
the coming of the Holy Spirit.

As you prepare to spend time with God, have your Bible with you.
Some people may like to have a red flower or a red cloth as the colour of Pentecost.

When you are ready, light your candle.

Psalm 104 – It’s A New Day by Richard Bruxvoort-Colligan

Psalm 104:33-34 (CEV)

As long as I live,
I will sing and praise you,
the Lord God.I hope my thoughts will please you,
because you are the one who makes me glad.

Song

TiS 408

O breath of God, breathe on us now
and move within us while we pray;
You are the spring of our new life,
The very light of our new day.

Be with me when no other friend
the mystery of my heart can share;
be always known, when fears descend,
by your best name of Comforter.

Prayer

On the day of Pentecost,
the followers of Jesus were all together in the same place.

Today, on this Day of Pentecost, we are scattered.

We are sad.
We cannot see each other face to face.
We cannot hear the sound of our friend’s voice or touch their hand.

Spirit of God, Spirit of Jesus, Holy Spirit, come to me today.

In my loneliness, touch me with the flame of your love.
In my isolation, breathe your life in me.
In my sadness, fill me with your dreams for the future.

Alone and together,
Holy Spirit, touch us with your life.

Amen

Prayer of Confession

Let us take a moment to talk to Jesus about the troubles of our week.

Lord Jesus, I am sorry because I…
I am very sorry because I…
I am truly sorry because I…

Please, in your mercy and grace, forgive me.

Hear the Spirit of Jesus say to you:

My child, I love you. I know you through and through.
I have carried your failures on the cross. You are forgiven.
Bible reading

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:1-7 (CEV)

On the day of Pentecost all the Lord’s followers were together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind! It filled the house where they were meeting. Then they saw what looked like fiery tongues moving in all directions, and a tongue came and settled on each person there. The Holy Spirit took control of everyone, and they began speaking whatever languages the Spirit let them speak. Many religious Jews from every country in the world were living in Jerusalem.  And when they heard this noise, a crowd gathered. But they were surprised, because they were hearing everything in their own languages. They were excited and amazed …

Now read on from Acts 2: 7-21 in your own Bible.

Think of friends from Gungahlin Uniting Church who will be reading in another language today. Arabic, Sinhalese, Korean, French, German, Mandarin, Cantonese, Welsh, Urdu, one of the languages of Uganda.

See their faces in your mind.

“When the last days come,I will give my Spirit to everyone.Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will have dreams. In those days I will give my Spirit to my servants, both men and women, and they will prophesy.

A question

Where do you see signs of the Spirit today?

Who are our prophets, our dreamers and our visionaries?

Write a note of encouragement to someone whose visions and dreams have been important to you.

Pray for them.

Song

Loving Spirit, loving Spirit
Shirley Erena Murray
TiS 417

Loving Spirit, loving Spirit,
You have chosen me to be
You have drawn me to your wonder,
You have set your sign on me.

Like a mother you enfold me,
hold my life within your own,
feed me with your very body,
form me of your flesh and bone,

Like a father you protect me,
teach me the discerning eye,
hoist me up upon your shoulder,
let me see the world from high.

Friend and lover, in your closeness
I am known and held and blessed;
in your presence is my comfort,
in your presence I may rest.

Loving Spirit, loving Spirit,
You have chosen me to be
You have drawn me to your wonder,
You have set your sign on me.

Loving Spirit, loving Spirit

Prayers for others

Ron Reeson

O Holy Spirit of God
Today is Your day – well, the annual day we celebrate your coming to earth as the Spirit of Jesus, to be with us, and in us, and beside us.

Jesus said You are the Helper If ever we needed help, it is now.
Some of us are tackling tasks we have never done before. Please come to our aid.

You are the One who distributes gifts for serving    Give us all gifts which we can use for You in serving others in these days, maybe gifts we have never experienced.

You said you would give us power to witness  Bring to our mind those who we should contact, support, visit. Help us find ways to do what is best

You are the Spirit of Unity  Bring together countries in conflict with each other, and people who are angry with leaders who they feel are more interested in the polls than the health of the nation, and are not guiding wisely them and well

You are the Spirit of Reconciliation   Bring together families in which there is increased tension and conflict at this time

You said You would lead us into truth Give wisdom to those seeking to find and create a vaccine for the coronavirus

You are the Comforter  Stand by those who grieve at this time or fear the worst for a loved one. Make real the presence of Christ to them, and in them.

You are the Spirit who leads. Guide the church council as it seeks to find the best ways to provide oversight for the worship, pastoral care and functioning of the church community in this difficult, unusual and unique time.

Spirit of God, You who breathed over the waters at Creation, breathe on your creation again, and give it new life and hope.

And finally we pray for ourselves

Breathe on me , breath of God;
Fill me with life anew.
That I may love all that you love
And do what you would do.

Amen

Song

Great God, your Spirit, like the wind
TiS 416

Great God, your Spirit, like the wind unseen but shaking things we see
will never leave us undisturbed, fulfil our dreams or set us free,
until we turn from faithless fear and prove the promise of your grace
in justice, peace and daily bread, with joy for all the human race.

Lord shake us with the force of love, to rouse us from our dreadful sleep;
remove our hearts of stone and give new hearts of flesh to break and weep
for all your children in distress and dying for the wealth we keep.
Help us prevent, while we have time, the blighted harvest greed must reap.

And then, in your compassion, give your Spirit like the gentle rain,
creating fertile ground from which your peace and justice spring like grain;
until your love is satisfied, with all creation freed from pain
and all your children live to praise your will fulfilled, your presence plain.

Blessing

Father, bless us as we go,
Jesus, walk beside us.
Holy Spirit guide us.

Home Brewed Worship – The Chaos Edition – The Ascension – May 24, 2020

May 24, 2020 by Darren Wright

Hi from the Wright family!

Well, that went seamlessly…

Hi everyone, so, the live stream extravaganza didn’t work out the way we planned. We’d not aimed at perfect; chaotic, noisey, energetic sure, but not perfect. We knew our kids and tech were all elements of possible chaos, but we’re not kicking the kids out of the house so daddy can worship. Who’d have thought that was the audio that’d fail (honestly, it worked at 12, 1 and 2am last night) and the kids would be… themselves and completely save me?

What we did get was an amazing whack over the head from God telling me that no matter how late at night I stay up and no matter how many times I preview and trial the online stream I should just be honest.

And honest is hard to do, it’s hard to be, especially when you’re supposed to put out an image for people of holy, leader material, all together… After all, isn’t that what you call me for? To be the perfect leader so no-one else has to be?

Here’s the reality though, honest is really hard and it’ll likely mean your son picks his nose on a live national viewed stream and you accidentally rewrite the Lord’s Prayer as you hug said child in prayer while the other jumps on a sofa.

You do not need to put on a show to be loved.

You do not need to be the picture perfect image to be a leader in our church.

And no matter who you are you are welcome here, and I don’t just mean whatever your language, your culture, your age, your sexuality or gender.

I mean you don’t need to hide who you are, when we do gather you do not need to put on an image of whatever your idea of “perfect” may be. We will worship together in chaos and with joy, we will worship together in times of pain and lament together.

But we’re not going to aim for perfect.

So be prepared, it is very likely that we will disappoint you at times.

So, if you missed the live stream today you can access it here, no, it’s not what we planned (though I’d love to say it was completely scripted).

And after it are some of the videos (plus two trial videos of Holly and I singing before we decided we’d do the music live because, well… our pitch wasn’t perfect).

May your week be a blessed one and may you find Jesus in the places he always told us he’d be, with your neighbour, the poor, the naked, the imprisoned, the refugee, the hungry, the sick, the lonely and the grieving.

All the video that was going to be in this Sunday’s live stream is now on our website including all the video that we’d cut because we preferred to do it naturally.

Today’s Blessing…

May this week find you staring at the sky, not looking for Jesus, but at the Beauty of God’s creation.

May this week find you seeing Christ, not in unexpected places, but expected places, with your neighbour, your colleague, the person who serves you at the supermarket, in the kids playing soccer on your street and in the conversations you have with 2 or three others.

May the peace of God, the breath of Christ and the anticipation of the flames of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Go in peace

Darren Wright

What didn’t make the stream…

After the massive audio/tech failure and we went to the iPad and went completely off script. Completely… all my script was on the iPad, which we now were videoing from, you didn’t get anything scripted… Just honest.

Home Brewed Worship Lite – 24/05/2020

May 23, 2020 by Darren Wright

This week’s worship resources have been created by Margaret Reeson, a special thanks to her, the worship team, Chris Dodd and others who have contributed.

Mark Beresford, the Pastor at the Gungahlin campus of Mosaic Baptist and Darren had a conversation about this week’s reading from the book of Acts, you can access the conversation on Soundcloud here, it’s 40 minutes of two pastors talking about the bible. Mark’s a good friend and we’re thinking we’ll do more of these and get better as we go.

This week Darren is leading the Assembly Facebook worship, a weekly worship service streamed via Facebook by a number of different ministers from across Australia. If you’ve been tuning in you would have heard some remarkable voices and been able to worship alongside many from the UCA.

You do not need a Facebook account to watch, just head to this link for a 10am EST service from our lounge room. https://www.facebook.com/UnitingChurchAu/ Not long after the service I’ll put the video on our website.

But until then, welcome to worship.

Call to Worship

Come. Sit quietly.
Light your candle.
Prepare your heart and mind to sit with Jesus.

A prayer

Loving God, you have led us to this place,
not to shield us from heartache and the pain of human life,
but to heal us and inspire us,
to gently redirect us,
till we see the world as you do
and love it with your love. Amen

From Psalm 68

Our God, you are the one
who rides on the clouds,
and we praise you.
Your name is the Lord,
and we celebrate
as we worship you.

Our God, from your sacred home
you take care of orphans
and protect widows.

You find families
for those who are lonely…..

We praise you, Lord God!
You treat us with kindness
day after day,
and you rescue us.

He Walked On Earth – TiS 260

Video/Audio: https://youtu.be/Dw-fjgslBrk

He walked on earth, showing glimpses of heaven;
Demons, death, disease had no hand.
The wind and the waves were obedient before him:
well may they say, “Who is this man?”

Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away our sin,
The light of the world, the son of God.
Worthy is the Lamb to receive our praise
and glory and honour and power.

On the third day he was raised up with glory,
Reigning on high, the risen Son:
We have new life, a new hope, a new future;
Now we cry, ‘Come, Lord Jesus, come!’

Prayer of Confession

You are invited to use your hands during prayer.
Close both hands into fists and turn them over.

Loving God, we come to you as your children,
trying to hide things from you,
hoping you can’t see what is hidden in our hands.

You say to us: What are you hiding, my child?
[Pause]

You say to us: What is it that you cannot let go, my child?
[Pause]

You say to us: Open your hand and let it go.
I will not prise your hand open, finger by finger.
You know what is hidden and hurting.
You can empty your hands,
you can open your heart.

See the open hands of Christ, torn by nails.
This pain was offered for us.
This loving sacrifice can set us free.

Let us open our hands.
Let us place our fistful of pain into the wounded hands of Christ.
He will hold it for us.

Thank you, Christ Jesus.

Amen

Bible reading John 17:1-11

After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

“I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.

Meditation on the scripture

Imagine that you are sitting with the other disciples. You are listening to Jesus speak these words. Read them again. As Jesus is praying this prayer to his Father, he is thinking of those who follow him, then and now. Is there a word or sentence here that is his word for you today? Mark it in some way, or copy it as a reminder.

The great love of God – TiS 164

Video/Audio: https://youtu.be/5sdMssEBQoI

The great love of God
is revealed in the Son,
who came to this earth
to redeem everyone.

That love, like a stream
flowing clear to the sea,
makes clean every heart
that from sin would be free.

It binds the whole world,
every barrier it breaks,
the hills it lays low
and the mountain it shakes.

It’s yours, it is ours,
O how lavishly given!
The pearl of great price
and the treasure of heaven.

Prayers for others

Our Loving God

The book of Ecclesiastes remind us “to everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” The seasons of our life I’m not always times of comfort and love and peace. Ecclesiastes tells us there is a time to die; a time to weep, a time to mourn, and a time to refrain from embracing – all apt to this season of our lives.

Today Lord we live in a season of trial. A season not experienced by the generations living on this small, fragile planet. We struggle, we are rage, we are confused
and we are sad, and we want this to end.
And it will but in its own time. Until then we must continue to struggle.

This day we pray for those who help us be the burden of this difficult season. Too many who are workers on a minimum wage.

We pray for our health workers – doctors, nurses, administrative staff, paramedics, ambulance drivers – and ask that you keep them safe and well and that they may find times for rest and recuperation before they face their next shift.

We pray for those who work in our shops, especially those in shops that supply the essentials of life – food, cleaning products and yes coffee. Many of them are young and for those who wonder what the next generation will offer we already see the future of our world here is in good hands and we thank you for that foresight.

We ask your blessing on cleaners, for their early starts and thoroughness. In their anonymity they are doing a vital service for us all. And also for those in our nursing homes. We pray that staff and residents will be safe and the isolation they are feeling is not proving unbearable.

And for our teachers whose value is now appreciated by so many, be with them as they move back to classroom, teaching and explaining this confusing time to their students.

Finally we thank You that through this pandemic we have found out who and what is truly important, and maybe hold onto that truth in the days and years to come.

Be with us during this season of our life. Walk with us. Help us understand.

Amen.

Blessing

May the God of hope
fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
so that by the power of the Holy Spirit
you may abound in hope.
And may Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen

About GUC

We are a community on a journey, we’ve grown from a small faith community planted in Ngunnawal in the early years of Gungahlin’s development to a thriving inclusive, intergenerational & multicultural community. As Gungahlin has grown we have seen a lot of change.

We are an open and inclusive community, everyone is welcome to use their gifts in worship, prayer, leadership, hospitality and teaching.
