First term at Boys’ Brigade

April 14, 2018 by Boys Brigade Coordinator

Fun

First term at Boys’ Brigade has finished, the weeks seemed to fly by. We’ve been busy, Our Anchors and Juniors have been practicing for the Boys’ Brigade International Junior Games Competition. They boys competed against Boys’ Brigade groups from around the world in a number of timed and scored events. We entered four teams this year.

We have taken advantage of Daylight Savings to enjoy playing games outside. We have also been canoeing, and had a combined Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade water games night. We have also joined with other Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade groups in Canberra for a family fun day.

Adventurous

Every year the four Boys’ Brigade groups in Canberra combine for our annual coast camp at Lake Tabourie. It’s a busy and packed weekend of swimming and beach activities, canoeing, fishing, bushwalking and hanging down around with mates. This year we took our largest ever contingent away. Most of our Seniors were brave enough to go on a day hike to Mt Bushwalker. Alf Jonas (a former Orion aircraft pilot) enthralled the boys and leaders with the story of the rescue of Thierry Dubois and Tony Bullimore from the Southern Ocean.

A number of our boys will be participating in the Anzac day march at the War Memorial on April 25.

Safe

Wednesday nights at Boys’ Brigade can get hectic. We have balls flying around the room, boys on the play equipment and boys madly riding the tricycles outside. Unfortunately, with the road construction around the church we have lost some of the grassed areas where we have run activities. It means we have had to play games in the Church carpark.   We’ve had the occasional skinned knee but fortunately we have had no major accidents.

Rowena Bartholomew also came along to during the term to teach the Seniors how to use the Church’s defibrillator and a give First Aid refresher.

Treat others with Respect

We have welcomed seven new boys to Boys’ Brigade this year. We now have 34 boys on roll, with 25 to 30 boys attending each Wednesday.   It’s been great to see lots of young boys starting Boys’ Brigade this year.   We are planning to run a separate Anchors group for the 5-7yo from Second Term.

Our Seniors group has dramatically grown this year. We have spent a fair bit of time this year doing team building activities.   It’s been great to see the group come together with the older boys willing to help the younger ones. Term 2 Boys Brigade starts Wed May 2. New boys are welcome.

About GUC

We are a community on a journey, we’ve grown from a small faith community planted in Ngunnawal in the early years of Gungahlin’s development to a thriving inclusive, intergenerational & multicultural community. As Gungahlin has grown we have seen a lot of change.

We are an open and inclusive community, everyone is welcome to use their gifts in worship, prayer, leadership, hospitality and teaching.
