On Seeing…

November 1, 2021 by Darren Wright

This reflection was brought to us by Gordon Ramsay (not the sweary one) on October 31, 2021

Readings

  • Job 42:1-7,10-17
  • Psalm 34:1-8,(19-22)
  • Hebrews 7:23-28
  • Mark 10:46-52

Have you noticed that people regularly see patterns in things.
We can be good at seeing images, or shapes, in clouds
or even seeing faces in the frothy milk on our coffee.
Sometimes we see patterns when in reality there probably isn’t really a pattern to see
and at other times we can miss patterns that are quite deliberately built in to things

October 28, 2021 by Darren Wright

We pray for the team working towards opening the Food Pantry on the 11th of November. We pray for the Food Pantry Management Team, the many volunteers and for Alison over the coming weeks.

We pray for all who hire space in the building, as they come out of lockdown we pray that they are able to return to operation smoothly.

We pray for those who have been nominated for Church Council in 2021/2, may they feel the blessing and affirmation of the community. We give thanks for the Church Council of 2020/1 and all the work they’ve done to lead the church through the pandemic.

We continue to pray for the teachers, staff, students and families of the many schools in Gungahlin as they move back to being fully operational. We pray this time is one of blessing and joy as they reconnect. We hold those facing exams in our prayers, may they feel relaxed and ready for the challenges ahead.

  • Our Walking Together as First and Second Peoples Circle and its work to grow relationships, listen and learn to First Peoples and to raise voices for justice and truth-telling.
  • Faithful disciples who have gone before us, and all those who have carried our traditions and taught us faith, as we celebrate All Saints Day on 1 November.

World

We join with the World Council of Churches as we pray for Canada, United States of America

We are thankful for:

  • the vast expanse of North America with its resources and varied landscapes; may they be preserved, enjoyed and used wisely
  • those who were its original inhabitants – First Nations and Native Americans
  • church-related organizations that strongly advocate for justice, and those that provide for new immigrants and refugees today, as well as for others who are poor and vulnerable
  • ecumenical and interfaith engagements which are occurring in many communities that previously were mainly white and Christian.

We pray for:

  • churches facing new challenges, that they may continue to witness boldly to the gospel in evolving multicultural, multireligious and secular contexts
  •  indigenous peoples in their long struggles for survival, land and rights; and for ongoing healing and reconciliation with those who have come after them
  • new immigrants, that they will continue to be welcomed in these countries, and that policies will serve the common good
  • effectively countering systemic greed that exploits communities and natural resources
  • government leaders that they would advance justice, human rights, and peace for all within these countries and in the rest of the world.

All that ends well?

October 21, 2021 by Darren Wright

The story of Job is a great place to go if you love stories that inspire tough questions, and over the last couple of weeks I’m hoping I’ve opened a few up to you, but, perhaps the toughest lot of questions for me come here at the ending of the story.

Perhaps the response of the friends in Job has frustrated us, maybe because we’ve been in on the bet and know Job is innocent, the friends response is ill informed. Maybe we’ve been frustrated with the friends because we’ve had well-meaning friends offer similar reflections to us when we’ve suffered, or maybe we’ve struggled because the friends remind us of times when we’ve responded to someone else’s suffering in ways that have been unhelpful.

But the most frustrating response, as I reflect on how I first read the story was how I responded as the reader. I came to the end of Job and thought “there’s the happy ending I was hoping for, it all worked out in the end.”

Yet, after a while the story began to haunt me (as many good stories do) and my response became something that made me feel uneasy, and I began to hear in my response the voices of the friends, again assuring that those who are righteous will end up being blessed… that it will always end with a happy ending.

About GUC

We are a community on a journey, we’ve grown from a small faith community planted in Ngunnawal in the early years of Gungahlin’s development to a thriving inclusive, intergenerational & multicultural community. As Gungahlin has grown we have seen a lot of change.

We are an open and inclusive community, everyone is welcome to use their gifts in worship, prayer, leadership, hospitality and teaching.
