Job’s Triangle

October 13, 2021 by Darren Wright

Triangle by Jon Klassen. Purchase from https://www.angusrobertson.com.au/books/triangle-jon-klassen-mac-barnett-and-jon-klassen/p/9781406376678

Readings

  • Job 38:1-7, (34-41)
  • Psalm 104:1-9, 24, 35c
  • Hebrews 5:1-10
  • Mark 10:35-45

This week I was reminded by the Working Preacher team of the Triangle of Job, where one point is God is good, another point is that a good God rewards the righteous and punishes the unrighteous and the final point is that Job is righteous. The thing about the triangle is that as we tell the story of Job we’re only ever able to hold two points of the triangle.

Job and his friends each decide to hold different points of the triangle at the same time. The friends choose to let go of the idea that Job is Righteous while Job lets go of the point where God is Good. I wonder, if you had the chance which points would you choose? I wonder, if you’ve ever suffered, or sat with another who has suffered and made a decision to hold onto two of these points? I wonder if we’re only ever able to hold two points of that triangle… unless something can challenge the idea that we’re only ever given these three options.

Community Prayers – October 8, 2021

October 8, 2021 by Darren Wright

Local

This week, as the world celebrates Love Your Book Shop Day we pray for all the places where we can access books. We pray for the book shops in Gungahlin, the last couple of years have been hard for small businesses and we pray for those who continue to sell books. We also hold our libraries in our prayers, for the librarians and those who help us all have access to stories of fantasy, science fiction, children’s literature, biography, adventure, science, history, literature.

We hold the world’s authors and illustrators in our prayers, for the stories they invite us into, the worlds they create, the dreams they inspire and the food they teach us to cook.

We pray for Maissa, Keith, Allan, Michael, Peter, Cameron.

We pray for the teachers and students of Gungahlin, of Canberra as they come to the completion of their first day of school for this final term of the year.

We pray for the Boys and Girls Brigades, in particular for their leaders as they continue to care for and lead the members of the brigades as they meet online, and prepare for possible face to face gatherings later in the year.

We pray for the Korean Salim Congregation and their ministry to the community of Gungahlin at this time.

Regional

This week we join with the Presbytery of Canberra Region as we pray for the Mt Dromedary Parish

  • Thanks that we have all been kept safe and well during the unprecedented events of our recent past and the opportunity to find new ways to worship.
  • Thanks that despite waning numbers our church folk remain resilient, supportive, and prayerful. God is very much with us.
  • For support of the behind the scenes workers who keep our Parish functioning.
  • For strength, wisdom and compassion as we deal with policies which will exclude unvaccinated people from our outreach programs.
  • For progress in filling the Community Chaplaincy position in our Parish.

National

This week we pray with the National Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia as we pray for

  • The Uniting Church in its commitment to act on the climate crisis and shape a better future for our planet.
  • The discernment of Uniting Church communities impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns that are beginning to consider ways they might gather in person again.
  • Members of the Northern Synod who are meeting in Darwin this week.

World

This week we join with the World Council of Churches as we pray for the world, in particular for Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela

We are thankful for:

  • the beauty in these countries, including in their people and cultural traditions
  • persistent, patient, prophetic work of churches and ecumenical and other organizations, to establish peace with justice throughout the region, especially in Colombia
  • resistance to past colonization, and to practices of today that prioritize economic ideologies over the needs of the people
  • efforts by churches and people of goodwill for inclusive and respectful relations in society and government.

We pray for:

  • the continued pursuit of peace in Colombia, the fulfilment of agreements reached, the reintegration of insurgents into society, broad and inclusive dialogue for justice, and fair compensation of those victimized by conflict
  • the strengthening of democratically elected governments in the region, without pressure from outside interests
  • greater respect for the human rights of all, especially vulnerable populations and those who work for the wellbeing of others and of the environment
  • an end to the corruption in these societies, and to unsustainable exploitation of their resources.

Can I Ask That? Can I Feel That?

October 7, 2021 by Darren Wright

Readings:

  • Job 23:1-9, 16-17
  • Psalm 22:1-15
  • Hebrews 4:12-16
  • Mark 10:17-31

There are no stupid questions… perhaps you’ve heard that before and maybe you didn’t believe it when you heard it, because deep down you might have a question you’re too afraid to ask, for fear of being seen as stupid.

What about feelings? Are there any stupid feelings? Are there any feelings you’re afraid to share with friends, family, your faith community or God? Are there any feelings that aren’t welcome in worship, perhaps you’ve stayed away from worship before because of some of these feelings, thinking they’d not be welcome.

The story of Job shows us that there are feelings that friends might find uncomfortable, but that God is able to carry. This shouldn’t be a surprise, the Hebrew Scriptures are full of stories of God’s people arguing, and fighting with God, there’s even a form of Psalm called Lament which is specifically a song / prayer of complaint, check out this week’s Psalm as an example.

Even Jesus cried out on the cross to God asking why he had been abandoned.

Reflection – It’s not your fault.

September 29, 2021 by Darren Wright

This is a brief reflection on the Job reading from Sunday the 3rd of October 2021, Job 1:1, 2:1-10. The story of Job gets 4 weeks of our time over October, it’s a great story.

Have you caught yourself wondering why things keep happening to you? Why you have cancer, why you’re going through a bad break up, why you’ve lost your job, why you find yourself homeless, why you’re sick, why you’re in hospital after a heart attack…

It’s not your fault.

Perhaps you’ve been tempted to make up stories to make yourself feel better, perhaps you, or your grandparents did something bad, sinned, and now you’re going through this.

It’s not your fault.

Perhaps you’ve caught yourself thinking that God’s testing you, that it’s all a part of your faith being tested. God’s closing a door and opening another, there’s always a reason for people’s suffering…

It’s not your fault.
