Home Brewed Family Worship Resources – April 26

April 25, 2020 by Darren Wright

Worshipping at home with a young family? At home we’re developing a particular worship style I’ve come to fondly call “Chaos Church.” We first create a sacred space, we sing some songs together while the kids bang on their instruments and make a huge noise, we read the bible together (again, if you need a bible for your children at home let me know), we talk about the story and then we pray together.

Here are some resources for you to use in worshipping with your family at home.

If you’re finding your way here from outside the GUC community welcome! you can receive updates of new resources each week via our community email list.

Sing

The song Praise The Lord Every Day by Yancy is filled with actions and animations, we’ve found our kids love singing along to these videos. They also produced the song Hosanna Rock that we’ve included in the last month.

Each week we continue to put together a playlist for people to listen to throughout the week.

Story

Darren reads this week’s bible story from the Growing in God’s Love Story Bible and provides some guiding questions for conversation here.

Rev Sarah Agnew over at Wesley UCA has created her own audio retelling of the story of the Road To Emmaus which you can find here.

But nothing beats sitting with your children and reading the story together, if you need a bible or stories to read with your family please ask Darren and he’ll try and find something for you.

We’ve put together a list of great bibles for families on our website here, Darren’s recommendation (and what we’ve been reading through over Easter is the Growing in God’s Love: A Story Bible which is available in hard cover book and also a kindle book (which works fantastically on the iPad, not the kindle)

This Week’s Readings:

Acts 2:14a, 36-41 (CEV)
Psalm 116:1-4, 12-19 (MSG)
Luke 24:13-35 (CEV)

Action

We invite your family can spend some time together baking bread.

As the bread cools, go for a walk together (here are some other walking conversation topics), spend some time talking about what you’d like to talk with Jesus about if you were able to go for a walk with him.

When you get home break the bread together and tell the story again of the disciples walking and breaking bread with Jesus from this week’s readings.

Perhaps you’d like to talk about your favourite meal stories from the bible. Theodore and I have created a short video of us making a soda bread with recipe here.

Play / Create

Spend some time with LEGO, create the story in lego form, what did the road look like, how do you imagine the characters in the story, what did their neighbourhood look like? If you don’t have LEGO, why not draw, paint, sculpt or use stuffed toys or puppets?

Table

This week perhaps you add a spare chair to your dining table. As you eat together you can invite everyone to imagine Jesus eating at the table with you. If you shared a meal with Jesus, what would you like to talk about? What has happened today that you’d like to share with him? What questions would you ask?

Pray

We’ve built a prayer wall at home for our family to use as a prayer space, I’ll put some instructions out this week, but you could easily create a prayer fridge, using magnets or a prayer wall using post it notes, or perhaps you’ve got a blackboard paint wall or board that you could use.

My favourite way of talking about prayer nowadays is to look at 4 types of prayer: Help, Thanks, Sorry, Wow…

  • What do you want God to help you with, or who do you want to pray for?
  • Offering gratitude for the day, the week, our family, giving thanks to God for all that we have.
  • Apologising for the times when we have hurt others, intentionally or unintentionally, also saying sorry to God for the times where we made choices that didn’t match with the way god wants the world to be,
  • Expressing amazement and awe at the world around us, music we hear, amazing things that happen to us, the earth, sky, moon and stars…

Use these as a guide for your family prayer time, it takes some time to get used to, but if you do it more than one time each week you’ll become familiar with it.

Home Brewed Worship – April 26, 2020

April 25, 2020 by Darren Wright

This week’s Home Brewed Worship provides you all a number of ways to enter into prayer and to explore the Gospel story. If you’re at home with family, a partner, a friend or a spouse please consider working through some of this with them. If you’re alone, consider phoning someone else and inviting them to join you in worship.

Carve out some space sacred space in your home, perhaps you have candle, some colourful material, a cross, a bible, some pictures of the world, artwork or images of Jesus…

You don’t need to use all of this material, nor do you need to do it all in one sitting, perhaps some of these prayers and music can travel with you throughout the week. Use the material as part of daily exercises, music to carry you through the week, reflections to ponder as you walk or stay at home.

For some your focus may be to hear the gospel preached, others the gospel sung, while others may want to find a practice that they can enter into over the course of the week to make space for the Holy Spirit to work on us. My focus this week will be exercising the practice of Lectio Vicinitas (Neighbourhood Reading), allowing the practice of walking, a large part of this week’s scripture readings to teach me.

*We know there have been others using this resource in their own homes or communities, if you’d like to have updates and information of new resources please jump on our email list.

Order of Service

Some people have requested a formal order of service as a guide to use this material at home. Access a formal order here. If you’re happy making your own way through these resources please make yourself at home.

As we enter into worship we invite you to contemplate these 3 questions:

  • What am I grateful for this week?
  • Who will I check in with / make contact with this week?
  • Where will I seek, or create beauty this week?

This Week’s Readings:

Acts 2:14a, 36-41 (CEV)
Psalm 116:1-4, 12-19 (MSG)
1 Peter 1:17-23 (CEV)
Luke 24:13-35 (CEV)

This Weeks Video Reflection

Singing The Story

We’ve made a playlist of songs that link with this weeks scripture readings here.

Worshipping at home with a young family? At home we’re developing a particular worship style I’ve come to fondly call “Chaos Church.” We first create a sacred space, we sing some songs together, we read the bible together (again, if you need a bible for your children at home let me know), we talk about the story and then we pray together.

Here are some resources specifically put together for you to use in worshipping with your family at home.

Each week we will offer you a couple ways to go deeper with the scripture, many of these invitations are becoming a part of a collection of spiritual practices on our website for people to use in their daily life.

These practices are designed for you to use during the week,

Invitation 01 – Make some bread, break it and share it with someone.

Invitation 02 – Remix the Psalm

Invitation 03 – Lectio Vicinitas (Neighbourhood Reading)

See our invitations to go deeper this week on our website here.

Lectio Vicinitas (Neighbourhood Reading)

April 25, 2020 by Darren Wright

Download pfd guide by Luke Edwards

SILENCIO (PREPARE)
As you prepare to depart, quiet your inner voice.

Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your steps and your observations.

Seek a mindset of openness, leaving preconceived assumptions behind.

LECTIO (READ)
As you begin walking, take a special notice of what and who you see.

In this stage try to avoid interpreting what you see, simply observe. You may take notes on paper or on your phone if it helps you to remember.

Take note of places where people are gathering. Look for written words on signs, posters, magazines. Observe the housing in the community, if a property is for sale or rent look up the cost.

What stands out to you right away? Remember you are not interpreting yet.

MEDITATIO (MEDITATE)
Find a quiet place to sit in the neighbourhood.

Reflect upon what you saw.

Replay the walk in your imagination, stopping for moments that stood out to you.

Ruminate on these moments. What stood out to you about them?

Slowly shift your focus from the mind to the heart. What feelings stirred in you?

What was happening under the surface? Where did you feel God’s presence on your walk? Where could you see God already working?

ORATIO (PRAY)
Shift into a conversation with God about what you saw on your walk.

You can do this in a journal if it helps.

Ask God some questions. Ask God for clarity in areas that are unclear.

Ask God where you might partner with God’s redemptive work already happening in the community.

CONTEMPLATIO (CONTEMPLATE)
As you begin to close, jot down your newly discovered insights about your neighbourhood.

Write down anything you feel like God was saying to you in this time.

Rest in God’s presence for a few moments before returning to your daily tasks.
