Prayers – May 07, 2021

May 4, 2021 by Darren Wright

Local

Join with the Gungahlin Uniting Church community as we pray…

God be with the Mother
Who sits long nights beside those who cannot sleep
Who holds in aching arms the hurting child
Who carries in her heart the burden of care and worry
And comforts without words

God be with the Mother
Who listens and does not judge
Who forgives and bears no grudge
Who opens the door to her heart
No matter what the cost

God be with the Mother
Grant freedom from anxiety
Grant peace and understanding
Give hope and perseverance
Give patience and unlimited grace

God be with the child
Who enters an exciting world
Who has much to learn
Who has much to share
Who is becoming

God be with the child
Who looks up to the mother
Who takes in all the mother does
Who learns from the wisdom shown
Who has boundaries to learn and stretch

God be with the child
Grant freedom from anxiety
Grant peace and understanding
Give hope and perseverance
Give patience and unlimited grace

God be with us all
May we learn to be all that we can be
May our respect be always there
May our gratitude be endless
May we love and be loved
May this all be in the name of Christ

Amen
(Adapted from a prayer from “God Be With The Mother – A Mother’s Day Prayer”)

Community News- Food Garden

April 29, 2021 by Darren Wright

Have you seen the food garden lately?

Are you aware we have an active food garden?

Here are some pictures of what it looks like at the moment. If you were to take a walk around the garden it feels like a jungle of pumpkin, beans and tomato vines oozing out of their garden beds with a forest of rhubarb, kale and broccoli leaves.

The food garden was established in 2015 with the aim to engage and create community with the view to providing vegetables to the Mustard Seed Food Pantry.

Over the years this has taken on many forms. Presently Mark Phythian, Riyadh and Chris, a friend of the pantry, have been tending to the garden.

Chris has put an enormous amount of time and effort in over the past five years since he walked through the doors of the pantry. During the summer he comes up most mornings and evenings to water, plant and tend to the garden bringing with him his vast knowledge of organic natural gardening methods.

Recently, due to his efforts, along with Mark and Riyadh we have harvested potatoes, kale, tomatoes, beans and rhubarb that we have given away to customers at the pantry. We will soon harvest broccoli and pumpkins. All this adds to helping feed and provide healthy foods to the visitors of the pantry.

Church Council – April 2021

April 29, 2021 by Darren Wright

At our Church Council meeting on Monday 19 April, we spent time reflecting on the book ‘Can Our Church Live?’ by Alice Mann.  This book was recommended to Darren by Elizabeth Raine as part of our Mission and Vision workshops.  We reflected deeply on 3 questions…

  • Who are we (especially at a faith level)?
  • What are we here for?
  • Who is our neighbour?

You can access chapter 1 of the book here

We also discussed plans for our next Mission and Vision workshop on Saturday 1st May.

We encourage all members of the congregation to attend this workshop and be a part of the mission and vision of this community.  Once again, the workshop will be catered for, and so long as we know in advance, childcare will be available on the premises.

Church Council has devised a draft Pastoral Care model which will be shared with the congregation after the second Mission and Vision workshop on 1st May.  After the workshop Church Council will contemplate any final adjustments before seeking feedback from the congregation.  We thank you for your patience as we have grappled with different ideas, and greatly appreciate those members of the congregation who use their gifts to support and encourage others.

The church building is undergoing some repairs.  These include a leaking roof and problems with guttering and downpipes in the office area, as well as maintenance to the playground.

We have updated our COVID Safe plan so that we can continue with communion and reintroduce singing.  We are seeking guidance around ventilation with a hope that we won’t have to have doors and windows open in the middle of a cold Canberra winter.

Each year congregations give money to Presbytery and Synod.  Church Council has agreed to once again give $15,900 this financial year.

Boys and Girls Brigade continue to grow from strength to strength.  Using money obtained from a grant, Boys Brigade is organising canoe training to enable them to provide greater opportunities for the boys.  They are also looking forward to one of their senior brigade members coming back this term.  Girls Brigade has welcomed two new members this term and will be running Pioneer Leader Training in the near future.

Regional

Join in with the Canberra Region Presbytery in prayer for New Mission Areas & Collaborative Projects

Rise Ministries

  • At its meeting last week Standing Committee of Presbytery approved the use of the St Aidan’s property by Rise Ministries. This is part of developing a missional relationship with Rise Ministries to model alternate forms of fresh expressions of church.
  • Rise Ministries is church re-imagined. It emerges within contemporary culture and engages with those who are seeking an alternative form of faith community. Rise Ministries is passionate about creating soul stirring spaces for people to grow and flourish in life, faith and business. It is shaped by Christian spirituality.
  • For more information about Rise Ministries, see Rise Ministries
  • Please pray for a clear path through the further processes for Rise Ministries to set
  • up in St Aidan’s, and for the developing missional relationship between Rise Ministries and Presbytery.

Strategy for Engagement to Grow Mission

  • Standing Committee of Presbytery also adopted the “Strategy for Engagement to Grow Mission” (developed by the Mission Strategy Committee) for the Presbytery’s engagement to grow mission with its Congregations, faith communities and other initiatives. The strategy includes action pathways for congregations to move toward mission, based on the Capacity Quadrant Model for mission introduced to the Presbytery in 2015/16.
  • Please pray that engagement with Congregations through this strategy will grow mission.

Mission Planning

  • Many of the congregations in our Presbytery are currently involved in planning for mission. Braidwood UC is taking steps to further resource mission through its Op Shop and its other growing connections with the local expanding over 55’s housing. It’s exciting to see how these connections are already taking shape in the lives of people in the local community.
  • Please pray that the ongoing planning for mission will be enriched through engagement with Presbytery and Uniting Mission and Education. Please also pray that planning for mission in our other congregations will lead to a fuller participation in Christ’s mission in the world.

We pray for:

  • the people in these lands who suffer from poverty and repressive rule
