Home Brewed Family – May 10, 2020

10/05/2020 by Darren Wright

Hi everyone, this week we’ve put some resources together to help you engage in worship with your family at home. This week we encourage you to discuss with your household:

https://vimeo.com/416654074
What are you doing to create sacred space in your homes? In the coming weeks I’ll be sharing a little more about what we’ve been finding helpful.
Elizabeth Raine has written a great piece in Insights about creating a sacred space at home.

Readings:

Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16
John 14:1-14 (Kanthi reads this week’s reading in Sinhalese)

Song:

One of the songs our family has enjoyed singing has been the song God’s Love Endures Forever by Richard Bruxvoort-Colligan, perhaps you might sing along with him.

Another song that would go well with this week’s reading is “This Little Light Of Mine” or “I Will Sing of Your Love Love Love“

Story:

I had a technical issue this week, so no story from me, but perhaps you’d like to head over to The Dollar Store Children’s Sermons website for a reflection on this week’s gospel.

or

Perhaps you’d like to head over to the children’s ministry video from Wesley Uniting Church “If you know me, then you also know God“

Prayer:

A Prayer Process for Children…

We make the sign of the cross:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Can you think of five to ten things that happened this week?

What did you most enjoy about this week?
Tell God about what you enjoyed

Did anything make you feel sad?
Tell God about what made you feel sad.

Are you finding it difficult not being able to play out with friends?
What friends do you want God to bless today?

Who else needs your prayers?

Think of someone who might be lonely or unwell
Pray for them in your own words
And ask God for what you and your family need

Thank God for your day.

We make the sign of the cross:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Worship @ Home Ideas

If you are creating a little reflective corner at home here are a couple of ideas:

a) Build a place with many dwellings with what you can find in the house. Talk with another about what it might look like to design a dwelling place where you feel welcome, comfortable and able to abide in God’s love.

Discuss:

  • Who and what makes you feel safe?
  • In what ways are you finding refuge right now?
  • How do you find refuge in God?

b) Illustrated Ministry’s resources for this week are available as a pdf for households to use as a discussion or prayer starter.

c) Pulse have created a weekly resource for households with young people, you can access this week’s here:

  • Preschool
  • Primary School
  • High School

Home Brewed Worship – May 03 2020

02/05/2020 by Darren Wright

This week’s Home Brewed Worship provides you all a number of ways to enter into prayer and to explore the Gospel story. If you’re at home with family, a partner, a friend or a spouse please consider working through some of this with them. If you’re alone, consider phoning someone else and inviting them to join you in worship.

Carve out some space sacred space in your home, perhaps you have candle, some colourful material, a cross, a bible, some pictures of the world, artwork or images of Jesus…

You don’t need to use all of this material, nor do you need to do it all in one sitting, perhaps some of these prayers and music can travel with you throughout the week. Use the material as part of daily exercises, music to carry you through the week, reflections to ponder as you walk or stay at home.

For some your focus may be to hear the gospel preached, others the gospel sung, while others may want to find a practice that they can enter into over the course of the week to make space for the Holy Spirit to work on us.

*We know there have been others using this resource in their own homes or communities, if you’d like to have updates and information of new resources please jump on our email list.

Order of Service

Some people have requested an order of service as a guide to use this material at home. Access a formal order here. If you’re happy making your own way through these resources please make yourself at home.

Home Brewed Families

We’ve curated some resources specifically for families to use in their homes this week, you can access them here.

As we enter into worship we invite you to contemplate these 3 questions:

  • What am I grateful for this week?
  • Who will I check in with / make contact with this week?
  • Where will I seek, or create beauty this week?

This Week’s Readings:

Psalm 23 (MSG)
Audio (Darren Wright)

Acts 2:42-47 (CEV)
Audio & Video (Bruce Warren)

1 Peter 2:19-25 (CEV)

John 10:1-10 (CEV)
Audio & Video (Bruce Warren)

Story:

Living together:

Darren reads the story “Living Together” from the Growing in God’s Love Story Bible

Questions for Conversation:

  • What does it sound like when people are praising God? How do you praise God? Ask someone you love what it sounds like when they are praising god.
  • Who is in your church? Can you imagine them and draw a picture of your church community?
  • How do pope show love, how do people help others? What are some ways you can share love with others?

What is God’s Name?

Darren reads the story “What is God’s Name?” from the Growing in God’s Love Story Bible

Questions for Conversation:

  • What are the names for God you’ve heard? What names for God are sung or prayed?
  • What name do you like using for God? How do you imagine God looks or sounds like?
  • What are some ways you could help God by being a peacemaker?

Worship @ Home Ideas

If you are creating a little reflective corner at home here are a couple of ideas:

a) add to the space some wool, or a toy sheep and take time during the week to consider how your faith nurtures you and what you can do to nurture others.

b) build/draw/paint/create a model church and add it to the space, and take time during the week to consider what kind of church community you want to help build in Gungahlin.

This Weeks Video Reflection

This week’s reflection on the story from Luke 24:13-35

The Rev Simon Hansford has released a reflection for Anzac Day: Lest We Forget

Singing The Story

We’ve made a playlist of songs that link with this weeks scripture readings here.

Worshipping at home with a young family? At home we’re developing a particular worship style I’ve come to fondly call “Chaos Church.” We first create a sacred space, we sing some songs together, we read the bible together (again, if you need a bible for your children at home let me know), we talk about the story and then we pray together.

Here are some resources specifically put together for you to use in worshipping with your family at home.

Each week we will offer you a couple ways to go deeper with the scripture, many of these invitations are becoming a part of a collection of spiritual practices on our website for people to use in their daily life.

These practices are designed for you to use during the week,

Invitation 01 – Make some bread, break it and share it with someone.

Invitation 02 – Remix the Psalm

Invitation 03 – Lectio Vicinitas (Neighbourhood Reading)

See our invitations to go deeper this week on our website here.
